My top money savings tip — marry a Scotsman!

Piggybank1I know, I know. Two blog posts in a week from me. Don’t fall off your chair. I just couldn’t resist my own entry for the BritMums Virgin Money Piggy Bank Tales competition.

This isn’t a “real” entry, as I am the BritMums founder, i.e. I can’t win my own competition. Plus *FULL DISCLOSURE * BritMums is running this competition as a paid project.

HOWEVER, when I think “saving money” — my poor ailing Scottish husband comes to mind. Plus I haven’t written about him for a while, so here goes…

I joke a lot about being married to a Scotsman, like how he got me to pay for my own wedding and to believe everything was invented by a Scotsman. But he also has instilled in me an importance of not spending. I’ve internalised this philosphy so well, sometimes I think I actually am Scottish.

So what are the top money savings tips I’ve learned from being married to a Scotsman?

  1. Don’t pay for anything if you don’t have to
  2. There is a voucher for everything
  3. Just put up with things — you really don’t need a new kitchen, the old 1970s one works perfectly well
  4. Holiday at the homes of family and friends, even if you all have to scrunch into one guest room
  5. Throw away the Boden catalogue before your wife sees it

I can highly recommend being married to a Scotsman. They are great at not spending saving money and the kilts are cute too.

I could do with your husbands help. My husband and I are terrible with money! We always say that it would be good if one of us was good with mojney, then they could keep the other one in check!

Ah if only I could train myself to chuck out the Boden catalogue!

Susanna, like you saving tips 🙂 One of my favorite things is to get soft skin while saving money. Use olive oil/almond oil with salt as a body scrub before you shower. You get the most soft skin for no money!
Also I designed my own wedding dress and shoes (photo’s on my stylefig blog) that is a great saving right there, without loosing great style!

My husband leaves me post-it notes all through the Boden catalogue saying ‘Don’t buy me’. He normally picks the things that I would actually like too which is spooky..

Funny that you should be talking of things Scottish… Sshh…
Do they have MacBoden north of the border?

And that is exactly why I DID NOT marry a Scotsman…I think I could cope with everything else but throwing away the Boden Catalogue before I’ve seen it….unforgiveable…

Susanna – love it. I have a friend with a Scottish husband and your examples are all sounding very familiar. I am surprised yours actually throws away the Boden catalogue though – surely that would make nice wallpaper?! (Don’t let him see this!!) Michelle x
