And you thought I'd never post it!
This pic was taken about 1982. I had just changed schools. My parents thought I would do better at the Catholic school. They didn't quite get that there was erm, more to worry about at fee-paying school, but hey ho they had my best interests at heart.
I wasn't all that fussed about changing schools. But I did have one caveat – I wanted to try out for the cheerleading squad. My mother called about the tryouts, and I came up with a "routine" which involved flinging my arms out at various right angels and yelling things like "Go Wildcats". I had been a cheerleader since Junior High School, so was actually pretty good at it (as evidenced by several gold awards at cheerleading camps and competitions).
My mother drove me all the way across town on the big day, my hair tied back in pony tails so tight my head hurt. What I didn't know was that the try outs were in FRONT OF THE WHOLE SCHOOL. It was too late to back out, so out I went, my 15-year-old self, yelling some stupid cheer in front of a bleecher full of people I didn't know. Looking back, of course I made the squad. How could you not pick the new girl with the guts? Actually, that was quite a good year for me. I ended up dating the captain of the football team. To this day, my brother still teases me about that.
In case you are wondering the two guys in the football jerseys are male cheerleaders. That's a whole other story (I'm sure the short one of the left had a crush on me).
Now you need to guess which one is me!

The one in the middle at the back, of course! And, wow, you dated the captain of the football team? Isn’t that like every American girl’s dream? I think it was a fair few British girls’ dream, too, at least those of us who grew up on a diet of Sweet Valley High books. 🙂

yes, middle back row!
Must have been so much fun, and how very all American to date the captain of the football team!
We have an all male cheerleading squad here in SF, they do an awesome routine at the pride parade, you may recall!

Wow that photo looks like it is straight out of one those American tv series I used to watch! Middle back row, yes?

How very American. That must have been so much fun. (Well, apart from the try out maybe.)

I often think back to that day and wonder where I got the courage to do it, but you are right it helped to oave the way in other areas.

Correct! Chearleaders actually don’t have pom-poms. Those are reserved for the “song girls” (at least that is what it was like a gazillion years ago). The song girls were usually more petitie girls, and it was a more sought after position. I was more sturdy and loud)!

I think you are the tall girl standing right in the middle, aren’t you? Great story and great photo. I’ve always wanted to be a cheerleader but we don’t have many American football teams in Italy and when I got to Turin to study at Uni I was to “old” to be one….Ciao. A.

What a gutsy girl you were! That’s a fantastic story. I don’t know many kids at that age who would have been so determined and brave. I was never a cheerleader, but I was in the flag corp. Which I loved! Perhaps I’ll dig my photo out for a blast from the past as well.
And what a classic photo! All that farah fawcett hair… I remember the trend in our school was to carry a comb in the back pocket for maintaining the flip.
Go on, tell us which is you!
