Fairy tales have changed. When I was at my mum’s this summer, I read my daughter fairy tales out of the old Ladybird versions that I had when I was a girl. The ‘gruesome’ factor was much higher in those days – I felt a bit uncomfortable reading them. My old version of Rapunzel has the prince blinded by thorns as he and Rapunzel are escaping, and they get separated. He has to wander in the desert, blind, for years, until she finds him, and then her tears heal his sight.
Ooh, it was grim in fairy stories in the old days. The Disney version looks much more fun.
I’ve also had a sneak preview of some of the merchandise. There’s a doll with long hair, that you can braid using a spinning gadget, with three forest friends holding each end (squirrels, birds – those creatures famous for their hair-braiding techniques).
