West Cornwall: Sykes’ Boslow Cottage

Boslow from Sykes Cottages: The perfect home for our West Cornwall getaway.

Oldest daughter is sitting her GCSEs this year with her first Art exam immediately after Easter Break. She wanted to take a few days off to just chill out before she spent the rest of the break studying in earnest. The poor girl has 22 exams over 2 months! I find the UK education system for teens unecessarily stressful, but that’s a whole other discussion.

Our challenge was to find somewhere in the UK a teenager could unwind. She likes surfing, and has never surfed in the UK, so we thought we would check out the famous surf culture in West Cornwall. We found a Sykes Cottage in St Just, which is the closest town to Lands End, and the gorgeous Sennen Cove! So off we went to wild and rugged windswept West Cornwall!

Boslow Cottage in St Just, which is the closest town to Lands End, and the gorgeous Sennen Cove!

Bowlsow Cottage is set in a parade of terraced house that overlook the sea.

Boslow: close enough to walk to the centre of town (5 minutes) or to the stunning Cape Cornwall Coast (1 mile easy walk). The coastal path to Lands End is a 2-hour ramble.

I’ve reviewed Sykes Cottages for a while now and have been delighted with each one we have stayed in. I trust their rating system (we always go for 4 or 5 ticks). Each of their 10,000+ listed properties have been personally inspected and approved. If you have ever booked that “perfect cottage”, only to find out that it was no so perfect when you arrived, you will appreciate how important this it.

Boslow Cottage in St. Just suited us well. A traditional 1800s granite terraced house that overlooks the sea, it was close enough to walk to the centre of town (5 minutes) or to the stunning Cape Cornwall Coast (1 mile easy walk). If you are feeling ambitious, the coastal path to Lands End is a 2-hour ramble.

Boslow was recently extended and completely renovated, adding space and luxuries including a gorgeous kitchen and underfloor heating, while at the same time preserving original features like the granite fireplace and floor boards. The effect is a very comfortable cottage to cozy up in when the West Cornish elements rage outside.

Boslow: Double bedroom with view of sea.

This double room overlooked the enclosed garden.

The family bathroom is finished to a high standard, with heated floors and a 15-jet jacuzzi bath!

Boslow sleeps 6, with 3 bedroom upstairs (1 x king-size double with TV and en-suite; 1 x twin with T;. 1 x double with TV). There’s a family bathroom with heated tiles and 15-jet jacuzzi bath – just the thing a teen needs after an afternoon surfing. There are fabulous view over headlands and to the sea from the upstairs bedroom where you can watch the sunset.

Boslow: View from the front bedroom!

There are lovely places around the cottage to relax and read a book!

The ground floor has a sitting room with leather sofas and a large wood burning stove with lots of logs, kindling and newspapers and everything you need to use it. We made several fires and really enjoyed them. The living area connects to a beautiful kitchen that has everything – including wine fridge! This year I brought several premade meals from COOK, which made meal times very easy.

My 14-year-old’s perspective

Every night we had dinner at Boslow. Mum brought everything we needed, including some yummy pre-made dinners from COOK. All we had to do was put it in the oven! One night we had a pasta bake and mum forgot the cheese so my sister and I walked into town to get some.

The cottage is very comfortable and easy to cozy up inside while the West Cornish elements rage outside!

We found these narcissus in the garden!

Owners Sharon and Adrian are very proud of Boslow, and they’ve left several helpful laminated notes around the house, almost answering your questions before you ask them. “Please mind the towel radiator, it can get very HOT” or a note on the mirror to wave on the lights (how else would you know).

My 15-year-old’s perspective

Boslow was very cozy, yet spacious, and the perfect place to come back to after a long day surfing! I got my own room (with an en suite!) But I liked to use the other bathroom too because it has a bath with jets!

The ground floor has a sitting room leather sofas and a large wood burning stove with lots of logs, kindling and everything you need to start a fire.

I was impressed with the supply of logs available.

Boslow has two outside areas with lawns, and a patio, barbecue pit and garden furniture. My only niggle was the parking. There’s room for 2 cars through a very narrow lane (6 feet 7 inches to be precise). Our car (Volvo XC90) fit within millimetres, but my husband found it too stressful to attempt a second time so we opted to park on the coastal road for the remainder of our stay.

The stone walls between cottages are aged and beautiful, with lichen and wild flowers growing in the nooks.

The owners have created a lovely history of the cottage. Tin miner families lived in Boslow for many years!

About St Just

Boslow is situated on the very edge of St. Just, a quaint mining town with galleries, restaurants, cafes, a Post Office, butchers and bakers and 4 family friendly pubs. St Just is the nearest town to Land’s End and is about eight miles west of Penzance. The town is an ancient settlement and is stepped in tin mining history. In the centre of the town is Plain-an-Gwarry, a theatre used for miracle plays in medieval times, and more recently for the Lafrowda Arts Festival.

Things to do in the area

Make sure to ready my post 14 Things to do with kids in West Cornwall. Meanwhile, here are a few highlights:

  • Cape Cornwall, where the English Channel and Atlantic Ocean meet, is about a 20 minute walk from the the cottage.
  • From St Just, the coastal path leads to dramatic Land’s End within a two hour ramble or head northwards to Pendeen Watch lighthouse.
  • Four miles away is Sennen Cove, a beautiful stretch of light sand, blue sea and rock pools. It’s also home to the ultracool Sennen Surf Centre, Sennen surf shop and Ben Tunnicliffe’s foodie eatery.
  • Penzance is about 20 minutes sway, with St Michael’s Mount, colourful harbour and Art Deco Jubilee Pool. It’s just a bit further to Mousehole.
  • Porthcurno Beach with its Minack Theatre carved in the granite cliff above are also must-see attractions.
  • Arty St Ives, with its galleries, museums, restaurants, cafes and beaches is about 20 minutes drive.

We could walk to Cape Cornwall from our Sykes Cottage, it was only about 20 minutes.

My 13-year-old’s perspective

We could walk to Cape Cornwall from our Sykes Cottage, it was only about 20 minutes. We passed cows and horses on the way, and ended up at Cape Cornwall. Cape Cornwall is very where 2 bodies of water meet. There was a sea lido there (where you could swim if you were brave!) and also a nice place to get cakes which my mum liked.

We passed these horses on our walk to Cape Cornwall.

This wild garlic was growing in the stone wall behind our cottage! We used some for dinner.

    Susanna,
I’m delighted that you all enjoyed your stay at Boslow and must thank you for your kind words. You’ve also taken some lovely photos that beautifully capture the cottage and surroundings, several of which are my personal favourites (the view, fireplace, kitchen and of course the whirlpool bath, even Sennen and Warren’s pasties!)
The renovation of Boslow turned into a labour of love and was extremely rewarding. One of the highlights was discovering the original granite fireplace that had been filled in, boxed in then covered over with a 1960s tiled concrete surround! One day I’ll do an album for guests to see Boslow’s transformation.
I hope your daughter’s exams went well!
    Kind regards,
    Adrian

I’m a huge fan of Cornwall after our visit earlier this year. I love the cottage you stayed in, it seems perfect for a holiday with teens. I suspect parking is a Cornwall thing, it’s not a part of the world built with the modern family car in mind

    • Susanna | 1st May 18

We just love going to Cornwall! It was our first time staying in the West – but it was well worth the extra driving!

  3. Erin Ek Rush | 30th Apr 18

What a holiday – I’ve never been to Corwall but I’d love to go! I love that the owners included the history of the cottage… I always like to know about old buildings. Fab that your daughters wrote in too.

    • Susanna | 1st May 18

I hope you make it to Cornwall soon! So much to do there for kids.

  4. Katy Stern | 30th Apr 18

This looks so lovely! I absolutely love Cornwall, I love its rugged beauty and a day at the beach definitely restores your soul. The surfing is something we would love too! Good luck with all those exams too xx

    • Susanna | 1st May 18

The surfing was a real highlight for my daughter – even in 6C weather!

  5. Chloe: Picture Taker Memory Maker | 30th Apr 18

Cornwall is our happy place! We’ve never ventured that far West but it’s definitely on my list of places to visit – it looks beautiful. Good luck to your daughter with her GCSEs – my stepdaughter is doing the same this year and my eldest daughter has her Year 6 SATs starting the same day.

    • Susanna | 1st May 18

Crazy all these tests, isn’t it!

  6. Daisy - Dais Like These | 30th Apr 18

It looks like a wonderful place for a study weary teen to chill out for a little while. The bakery in St Just looks amazing – that window display!

    • Susanna | 1st May 18

The big thing for the bakeries was to let you know when the pasties would be fresh and just out of the oven!

  7. Sarah Christie | 30th Apr 18

This looks like the perfect location for you all, I bet it was cold in the sea but its great to have UK options for surfing. When we book a holiday kitchen the kitchen is key for me it has be cool and a cooks kitchen where we can all hang out and cook and this looks perfect, what a great find x

    • Susanna | 1st May 18

Yes kitchens are important, as are utensils that work i.e. I rarely find knives in a rental kitchen that are sharpened (sorry, a pet peeve).

  8. Penny | 30th Apr 18

We’ve loved all the Sykes places we have tested too. Love this holiday idea, so important to give teens under exam pressure a break and cottages are perfect! Lovely photos and bakeries always make my holidays too. Must get back to Cornwall!

    • Susanna | 1st May 18

I’ve been so pleased with our Sykes cottages, I’ve reviewed 4 of them and all have been high quality. x

What a great base for a surfing break in Cornwall. That kitchen and jacuzzi bath look wonderful – I can imagine hanging out in both thee places with a glass of bubbly after a day exploring!

    • Susanna | 1st May 18

So much fun, and amazing to bump into you at Porthcuno!

  10. Lisa (Travel Loving Family) | 30th Apr 18

Cornwall might be a long distance from London, but I’m finding it more and more appealing. It sounds as though you were able to really get away from it all here – but still have plenty to do, in what sounds like a thriving arts hub. And surfing! It looks great fun, and I’m lookin forward to the days when my two are old enough to try it.

    • Susanna | 1st May 18

Those days will be here sooner than you think!

  11. Lisa (Travel Loving Family) | 30th Apr 18

What a cosy cottage and a perfect location too. My dads friend lives in St Just, its a very pretty village isn’t it. I was amazed when I saw pics of your daughter surfing! Very brave girl. I would want the sea to be ALOT warmer before heading out with my surf board;)

Perfect way to unwind before the exams. We’ve stayed in a few Sykes cottages in the Peaks and always been very impressed. I find their website really easy to navigate too. Good luck to your daughter! I’m sure Mum has a good holiday planned for post-exams as a reward 😉

    • Susanna | 1st May 18

Yes working on that post GCSE trip! x

  13. Emma Raphael | 28th Apr 18

It sounds like the perfect home from home! That fireplace is gorgeous! They have managed to fit a lot of space in to a building that doesn’t look that big from the outside! 😀 We had a break surfing in Cornwall last year, and it was just lovely. Even though the sun didn’t show itself much! 😀

    • Susanna | 1st May 18

I’ve only managed to be in Cornwall a couple times with super sunny weather. It’s usually bright and breezy and mild.

  14. Cathy (Mummytravels) | 28th Apr 18

What a great place to unwind – I do love Cornwall, especially the wilder north coast. A walk there seems to blow all your cares away – and 22 exams in 2 months is plenty to stress anyone out. What a gorgeous cottage and lovely break. I might steal your brilliant idea about taking COOK meals, nicely stress-free too (especially with a wine fridge)

    • Susanna | 1st May 18

I soooo bringing COOK next time too. It’s a bit more expensive, but totally worth it. x
