Shattered!

Iphone4shattered

Boo! My beautiful iPhone4 is shattered! The little jewel slipped out of my hand while taking photos for this post. Hubby cried (he's Scottish and the phone cost £500) . It still seems to work, but I cannot safely use it as it is shedding flecks of glass like a molting dog.

It turns out this is another common iPhone4 problem.  I forgave Apple for the reception problems (which, BTW, I discovered while on the phone to a BBC's Woman's Hour producer, and the calls kept inconveniently dropping.) I ordered my "free" case in July. It is due in October. I'm starting to wonder if the longer battery life is worth all these problems. Come on guys, why design a phone with a glass back? Grrrrrrr!

I went by Carphone Warehouse, and my options seem to be: A) get the phone repaired for £159. This can take up to 28 days — but they will kindly loan me a basic phone to use while it is away. A Twitter friend suggested googling "iPhone screen repair" for cheaper options. Or B) I can purchase a cover.

Iphone4cover

I bought this one for £16. It covers most the shattered back. I'll see how it goes.

Iphone4front

This is what the front looks like. Very snug.

If you are going to buy an iPhone 4 I strongly suggest you think long and hard about it (and get insurance and a rubber case).

Have you had any issues with your iPhone4?

I appreciate the warning, I never realised the Apple Iphone 4 had such an obvious technical design fault as its Achilles Heel. I think I will wait for the next version or when they make an Ipad an Ipadphone and add proper flash software and so on.

Ooohh I am crying for you
I must warn hubs, he’s just got one and he keeps dropping it, which is nothing unusual for him. Actually he doesn’t deserve one, I do, I would look after it really well…

  5. Tamsin | 7th Sep 10

Oh man! I am so sorry. YOu’re taking it very well, I would have done a LOT of swearing and sulking. Still, am eyeballing the new iPad and going, “hmmmm”. Will be following your adventures with that closely.

I really feel your pain on this, I would sob like a baby if anything happened to my beloved iPhy. Mind you, it’s a 3G not a 4, I didn’t like the blocky shape of the new one. I would do as Pooky suggests and take it to an Apple shop and hope it’s within warranty. Good luck!

  7. Pooky | 7th Sep 10

This happened to mine but I took to to a genius bar (in an apple shop) and they replaced it on the spot for free because it was still within warranty. They did strongly advise putting it in a case though!
I didn’t tell them that my nine month old was using it to aid her teething and dropped it on the floor in B&Q – not sure the warranty would have covered that…

  8. Nova | 6th Sep 10

Oooo…not good! I thought the glass was supposed to be extra extra strong and virtually unbreakable. :0(
Yes….I have iphone4 ….wish I’d stuck to my iphone3g. I am scared to use it on important calls because I can’t hear properly or they can’t hear, or the call cuts off!
Not happy with it on the whole but I do like the battery life…has to be something positive on it. 😉

I used to have Nokias, such a fashion statement

  10. Susanna | 2nd Sep 10

I’ll check into it, it might be…

Oh no, poor iphone!! I have a Nokia but would LOVE an iphone. Shame I have a million years left on my contract 🙁

  12. amodernmother | 1st Sep 10

The battery life is a godsend though … it’s just riddled with so many other issues

  13. amodernmother | 1st Sep 10

May you never drop the new one.

  14. A Modern Mother | 1st Sep 10

Yes, they hate to part with money more than most people!

  15. Muddling Along Mummy | 30th Aug 10

Don’t. I had two replacement iphone 3GS’s because of the strange crack up the back thing (despite being in a titanium case…) and yet merely seconds after it goes over its 12 month warranty period (and 2 and a half months after the last replacement but I can’t get to an Apple store before the three months are up) its wrong again ….)
But I still love mine despite it not being quite perfect… um no way this a warranty thing?

  16. Ellen | 30th Aug 10

Ouch I think I would have cried! Not only do I drop mine and let it get beaten around by flying foundation and eyeshadow compacts in my bag- I also let the kids loose with my iphone3. I do have a cover for it which seems to cushion it from my clumsiness but it sounds like iphone4 is far to fragile for my hands – I’ll steer well clear!

  17. Geek Mummy | 30th Aug 10

    Ouch, that is a tragedy.
I dropped my old 3G on our tiled kitchen floor, and it survived really well. In fact I initially thought it had escaped undamaged, but then I realised that the little switch on the side that mutes/un-mutes the phone had broken. Thankfully I have one of those “added value” bank accounts, and one of the things they give me is mobile phone insurance, so I managed to claim on that, and got a brand new phone.
Which reminds me, I must give them a call and let them know that the geekdaddy and I now have shiny new iPhone 4s. Before we have an accident like you did.

  18. Metropolitan Mum | 30th Aug 10

Ouch. That doesn’t sound like a phone for me then. I keep on dropping mine. At least once a day. And if don’t, little L makes sure it gets its daily dose of dropping.
Your husband sounds like a very sensitive man. Though I don’t know many Scots. Is that normal?

  19. Susanna | 30th Aug 10

I did forget to mention that we are just off a 10-hour flight …

  20. Susanna | 30th Aug 10

If you are happy with your last one, keep it for a while there are some serious issues with Apple’s fourth child

  21. Susanna | 30th Aug 10

    Mine says thanks

  22. Susanna | 30th Aug 10

    Grrrrrrrrrrrr! Is that scary

  23. Susanna | 30th Aug 10

    LOL!

  24. Susanna | 30th Aug 10

Really? wow, I think I may stick it out with my bandaged one for a while…

  25. Susanna | 30th Aug 10

    I’ve never used a Blackberry!

  26. Susanna | 30th Aug 10

am very scared of those sites …. a friend suggested this one though http://www.i-phone-repairs.co.uk/

  27. Susanna | 30th Aug 10

    and pixie dust!

  28. Susanna | 30th Aug 10

That’s the iPhone4’s only redeeming feature — super long battery life

  29. Susanna | 30th Aug 10

I find the flash a bit annoying

  30. Susanna | 30th Aug 10

iPhones, can’t live with them, can’t live w/o them!

  31. Susanna | 30th Aug 10

    bummer

  32. Susanna | 30th Aug 10

Yes I think a protective cover is key to saving the life of an iPhone4

  33. Susanna | 30th Aug 10

I’ve never dropped a phone in the toilet as of yet, how did you, oh never mind

  34. Susanna | 30th Aug 10

I like the older one too, and Cath Kidston!

  35. Susanna | 30th Aug 10

    I’m afraid he did

  36. Susanna | 30th Aug 10

I went by their campus in Cupertino and kissed the ground.

  37. A Modern Mother | 30th Aug 10

I used to me a Nokia fan too. I’m so fickle.

  38. notesredshoes | 29th Aug 10

I immediately clicked on this thinking you were shattered ;-).
I am now relieved it is your iphone – still sucks though!

  39. Liz@VioletPosy | 29th Aug 10

Nooo!! I would have cried a *lot* the cover is a good idea and I’m now totally put off getting an iPhone 4. I’m forever dropping my 3GS, I’d murder it in minutes. Hope it gets fixed soon x

  40. If I Could Escape | 29th Aug 10

Oh no! My iPhone 4 is giving you iPhone 4 a gear big get well hug!

  41. MisssyM | 29th Aug 10

I say go with it shattered as it is. It says “Look how dangerous and devil may care I am. I’ve got an i-Phone but I don’t give a fuck about it, I just bash it off stuff. How scared of me are you now?”

  42. Suzanne | 29th Aug 10

We are also part of the “Shattered iphone ” club. It happened last week, and fortunately hubby had kept his old iphone, so we have managed to get a replacement sim and he is using that until we manage to get an appointment at the “Apple” shop – they are like goldust.

  43. Knackered Mother | 29th Aug 10

I’m a Blackberry gal, won’t let myself near an iPhone as know I would waste serious amounts of time on it…madness to have a glass back, agree.

  44. JSco | 29th Aug 10

I feel your pain, I too dropped mine and the back is shattered. My case arrived from apple a couple of weeks ago and covers it up nicely though.
Beware of websites saying they can fix it for £20 or so, you may never see your phone again. The standard price to replace it is £139 (repaired by Apple or an authorised supplier).

  45. EmmaK | 28th Aug 10

poor baby!! I don’t have any hand held device precisely because I know it would slip into the toilet faster than you could say Peter Pan!!

  46. Rosie Scribble | 28th Aug 10

Oh, I think Apple should send you a nice shiny new one! I don’t have an iphone but a friend is always complaining that her battery doesn’t last all day.

  47. Calif Lorna | 28th Aug 10

I’m still using my iphone 3 case for my iphone 4 which is a bit of a problem because it covers up important things – like the flash!
But it’s a very cool Paul Frank case and I refuse to give it up!
So sorry you dropped your phone – I know how much you love it.

  48. Iota | 28th Aug 10

Oh, you sound like a jilted lover! You were so in love with that phone, and now you’re warning other women to “think long and hard”.
That case seems like a good idea, but I’m wondering if you can paper over the cracks in your relationship with a plastic case. That might be the equivalent of flowers and a nice dinner. Works for a while, but doesn’t address the underlying issue. Can you find it in your heart to forgive? Seems like you had something good going with him… I mean, it…

  49. Expat Mum | 28th Aug 10

Feeling very glad I got the butt ugly big plastic shield thing to go over mine. I drop it a lot (my fault, not the phone’s) and it just bounces.
    Very sorry for your loss!

  50. Baby, Buggy, Boat | 28th Aug 10

Not and iPhone 4 but I dropped my 3G the one time I took it out without a cover and shattered the screen. Again it still works but isn’t half as pretty 🙁

  51. primo bambino | 28th Aug 10

I was having signal issues with my iphone until I added the cover to it. Luckily I had my protective cover on from day one as i’m always droppping it! Hope it works out for you.

  52. Jenny | 28th Aug 10

Argh! Nightmare. I dropped my iPod touch in the toilet a few months back. Never worked again and no insurance. Very costly mistake. Hope your cover works or nice Mr Apple sees the post, takes pity and sends you a new one…

  53. TheMadHouse | 28th Aug 10

We have an older one and I am more than happy with it, it has been droped by the boys etc and I have only just got a cover for it from Cath Kidston. I would be really upset too

  54. Potty Mummy | 28th Aug 10

Did he really cry? (Nokia all the way for me I’m afraid, luddite that I am…)

  55. jay | 28th Aug 10

Oh THAT’S gotta hurt. I still have the 3Gs and love it, very reluctant to upgrade after all the probs I’ve seen with iPhone 4. You know what really drives me nuts? After all this crap and their failings, I still adore apple. I’m pretty sure they’re brainwashing me.

  56. muummmeeeee! | 28th Aug 10

Ouch…that must have hurt! Think I’ll stick with my Nokia!
