Review: Pizza Express Christmas Menu

I’ve been having an affair with Pizza Express for a long time.

It started before I was married, but was living with OH. Driving home on the M4 after a day working in Stockley Park for a software company, I’d realise there was nothing in the fridge for our dinner. I’d stop by our local restaurant and pick up an Americana and a side salad and we’d eat it at home, with a large glass of red. For a few minutes we’d forget about work and were a happy threesome.

The Pizza Express model works well for families: an fun activity pack, a nice children's menu and a glass of wine for mum and dad.

When we had children, Pizza Express continued to be a favourite. The whole set up works well for families. An interesting activity pack. A kid’s menu with veggies! Nice pizza. Reasonable prices (especially with the vouchers!).  And a big glass of wine for mum and dad.

The formula worked so well, we went there several (hundred) times. But familiarity can get you into a rut. For a long time I’ve ordered a Soho pizza with the fabulous Romana crust (a Margarita with olives, garlic and rocket). I’m not even sure it is still on the menu, but our local restaurant faithfully makes it for me.

Pizza Express asked us to review their new Christmas menu. Our only instructions were to try the new Christmas items. What a brief!

Our two younger girls (8 and 9) chose their meal from the Piccolo Menu, but our 11-year-old, hubby and I tried the Two Course Christmas Lunch Menu (£14.95). There are five starters to choose from, including some old favourites like Mozzarella and Tomato Salad, Bruschetta and Garlic Bread.

The new Christmas items included: Arancini Ragu, baked vegetable ragu and mozzarella risotto with rocket and a spiced arrabbiata sauce and Contadino, a rustic Italian stew with a crumbled sausage of fennel and chill, lentils, chestnut mushrooms, garlic, tomato served with warm dough sticks. The Contadino was fabulous. I’ve never seen anything like it at Pizza Express, it’s a thick and spicy (but not hot spicy) stew. When the weather outside is frightful, it’s a perfect warming starter for this time of year.

Mains included 7 choices. There were the usual pizza’s like Padana (goat’s cheese, caramelised red onions, spinach and garlic); Giardineriera (artichokes, mushrooms, red peppers, santos tomatoes, leeks.olives, mozzarella and tomato and pesto) Pollo As Astra (Chicken, sweet Pepperdew peppers, red onions, mozzarella and Cajun spices); and Francesco Mazzei Calabrese (spicy sausage, fresh red chilies, roquito peppers, red & yellow peppers and rocket).

The Christmas additions included Trifolata Romana – Chestnut mushrooms with taleggio and mozzarella cheese, fresh sage and garlic on a mushroom and truffle sauce. I don’t usually like truffle, but the sauce was light and it was a nice combination.

But my absolute favourite was the Porchette Romana – Roasted pork belly, fresh sage and mozzarella on a cider sauce, with Gran Moravia cheese and pork crackling. It was savoury and slightly sweet with the apple sauce, and truly scrumptious and moorish. My only suggestion is I think it could be made even more perfect with something green on top, such as rocket to parsley.

There’s a diet option, the Leggera Superfood Salad (under 300 calories). I was very tempted. But the Porchestata Romana won out.

Dessert. Can you order anything other than the Snowball Dough Balls? For Christmas, the famous Pizza Express dough balls are sprinkled with cinnamon and dusted with icing sugar and served with a vanilla cream dip. It is an absolute favourite with my girls. The plate appeared, and then the contents disappeared within minutes.

There is also a Mulled Winter Fruit Crumble, which sounds fabulous. We were just to full to even think about trying it.

And every meal must end with a cappuccino. The girls ordered their bambinocinnos, which is the same thing, but without the espresso!

We enjoyed trying the new items on Pizza Express Christmas menu. You get all you expect from Pizza Express, with some fabulous festive alternatives.

Hi Susana! Crazy, but I miss Pizza Express and I especially miss London this time of year. I’ve been back in the US 2 years now and there isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t remember my days in the UK. Although, I love having the free babysitting and my mom near by. Hope all is good with you! I’ll be in the UK in April — maybe a blogger meetup?? Maria xo

That menu sounds amazing – I love the sound of the pork belly which is one of my favourites.

Oh wow, I am so, so jealous! I always though normal dough balls were the best food ever created, but I am all about trying SNOWBALL dough balls as soon as possible!

Ooooh, that looks delicious. My little boy loves Pizza Express, he chose to go there for his birthday 🙂 the kids menu is brilliant. I do rather like the sound of the Mulled wine crumble too!

I so wished I had tried the mulled wine crumble!

Yummy! I’ve been a fan of Pizza Express since I moved to this country almost 17 years ago. It’s always American Hot for me!!! And reading a comment above I see they do gluten free pizzas, which is great, as we’ve given up gluten recently. Yay! Jx

    • Susanna | 27th Nov 13

I started with the American hot and moved to Soho! PS – I’ve been here longer 😀

All of that sounds lovely…. I have a bit of a soft spot for Pizza Express. They bought a lovely old pub that we used to visit just around the corner from where we lived. I was so upset because even though it wasn’t really used a lot anymore, they might get rid of the tiled interior which is quite rare to find nowadays, but they didn’t and were completely sympathetic with it. Plus the pizza’s are always good! 😀

What a nice story! And a perfect place for one. x

Oh this looks awesome – I kept having to re-read the ingredients in those dishes to get my head around them because they sound so scrummy. We’re big fans of Pizza Express because they’re so good with the children but wouldn’t have considered them Christmassy at all, until now…. darn it!

    • Susanna | 27th Nov 13

The people who write the menus really know what they are doing! xx

Perfect timing! We were chatting about a visit to the Christmas market in Bath next week rounded off with at Pizza Express, the Christmas menu looks fabulous! Trifolata Romana sounds right up my street and those doughballs….? Irresistible!

    • Susanna | 29th Nov 13

      Enjoy Bath (and Pizza Express)

I’m also a huge fan of Pizza Express… one thing I love about them is that you can visit any PE restaurant in the country and you always know you’re going to get a meal of quality and yumminess. I usually order La Reine… I’m definitely going to sample the Christmas menu though!

Pizza express is a firm favourite in our family too. Ronnie particularly likes to have pizza when we go. Bless he only thinks there’s one type! But it must have olives and peppers.

When I was in my teens I used to go with my parents every Friday night as a family for our weekly fix.

    Great review x

My girls usually have the ham pizza. Very predictable. X

Wow, everything looks so delicious, I bet the stew is a brilliant option on a cold winter day, after work or Christmas shopping! The only problem I’d have is that it would take me SO long to choose what to order as I’d want to try everything!

    • Susanna | 29th Nov 13

      What she said. X

  14. Jen | 26th Nov 13

Wow what a fabulous sounding menu. Love the idea of the rustic stew and snowball dough balls! We love Pizza Express too for a family meal. These Christmas additions are a refreshing alternative 🙂

I hadn’t thought of going to Pizza Express for Christmas. It sounds like a nice idea for a pre-Christmas treat!

    • Susanna | 29th Nov 13

Now I want to go again. x

  16. Helen Neale (@KiddyCharts) | 26th Nov 13

Wow – those dough balls look an absolute treat! Can’t wait to try out this menu myself. I very much suspect that those are going to be a firm favourite with my two as well… 😀

We too have had a long term affair with *PE* – you just can’t beat it can you? The Christmas menu sounds a surprise, I wouldn’t have imagined that at all, will definitely take a look, the Arancini Ragu sounds divine! 🙂

    • Susanna | 29th Nov 13

My fave was the pulled pork and apple pizza x

Pizza Express has always been a big part of my life too. When I had to start a gluten free diet earlier this year I thought it was all over between us… but they showed me how much they loved me back and started offering gluten free pizzas! Happy days for all. Now, it is one of our go to places to eat out as a family as we know there will be something on the menu that we ALL can eat and enjoy 🙂

    • Susanna | 30th Nov 13

Gluten free pizzas? Wow, that’s cool.

OH LUCKY YOU….if they need any other blog reviews we have a local one we frequent regularly and my kids and I would be delighted to do a small report…..I am a big fan (mostly because they serve the wine I like!)
