Scotland, shorts and New Year cheer

The scotts

I opened my email this week and got a wee surprise. Hubby’s cousin sent over some incriminating photos from Christmas past.

In fact, he sent over a whole load of photos taken by my husband’s Aunt at every holiday. My husband is no spring chicken, so this is a lot of photos.

We had a good laugh going through them. Hubby is the one on the right, with the wide grin and the banjo.

We all asked Scottish Grandma (who is here for four weeks) why daddy was wearing shorts. In Scotland. In December. Even hubby wanted to know.

She replied that was the attire for “boys of a certain age”.

I asked him if he remembers being cold. He said he didn’t, but maybe it explains why he has an aversion to wearing shorts.

Happy New Year everyone! Hope you have a warm one. It’s -4C outside. Brrrrrrrrrr.

    Cute!
    Happy New Year!
My son had to wear shorts year round at his current school until last year when he reached a certain age. So cruel. My American relations were horrified: “saturday school and shorts?!”

My husband also remembers wearing shorts in winter up until about the age of 8 – and this was in the 1970s!
    Happy new year to you….

I always feel sorry for the private schoolboys who have to wear shorts throughout the year, Edinburgh is not the place for shorts…in December!!

Yes, I seem to remember that boys wore shorts all year round, up to the age of about 8. In winter, the concession was that they were woolen (they called it ‘grey flannel’, but I think it was thin wool). The shorts were long – they came down to just above the knee, and they had knee-high wool socks, so I suppose it was only their knees that got cold, but even so. Very odd indeed.
    Great picture. Really great!
