This was very sweet and spare.
I’m glad that you are coming out of the fog-phase of motherhood enough to appreciate the really good bits. Enjoy those . . . because in 10 years you will have three teenaged girls!

R rarely wants to hold my hand, these days. It’s a fight to walk along the pavement much of the time, because she just wants to run off. I hope she’ll come back to doing it voluntarily once her desire for independence has calmed down a bit.
(There’s an award for you over at mine, though not sure if you’re into awards?)

My two big kids are well past holding my hand, but the little guy reaches for my hand wherever we are without even thinking. All I have to do (if I’m not already holding hands with him) is reach out the tiniest bit, and his little hand slips into mine, without missing a beat. Delicious.

My own sense of identity did not begin until I had a child, I had no idea as a teenager what I “wanted to do” with my life. Getting married and having a baby seemed the most natural thing in the world, and I love being a mama. You carry a child, you bear a child, you raise a child, you set them on the right path towards adulthood (hopefully) and then watch them find their own identities. Best job I’ve ever had. My 16 year old will still hold my hand if she and I are out somewhere – I love that, and I love that she’s not embarrassed to do so.

the only way i get *mine* to hold my hand is by going into the street, where i DEMAND that they do it. sometimes i cross the street when i don’t even need to. JUST FOR THE HAND HOLDING.

It’s a wonderful achievement. Few of us take enough credit for what we have managed, or have the time to reflect on it.
