Got an iPad? Now what?

Ipad I bought myself an iPad while I was in California. I justified this small investment by telling Scottish hubby they were 20 percent cheaper in the US. He fell for it.

It's basically a big iPhone — without the phone bit. I love it. The girls love it. I know it sounds shallow, but size IS everything. Maybe it's my age, but I like it big. You can actually read your email on an iPad, or watch a movie without squinting.

On my US travels I met with Jamie Pearson (aka @travelsavvymom) whom I first became acquainted way back when Twitter Moms had just a couple hundred members. Jamie runs the highly popular Best Kids Apps for iPhones and iPads. We met at a Parisian cafe in Stanford Mall; Jamie had her son and I brought my 8-year-old daughter. After chatting for a few minutes … the iPads shyly came out, and the kids broke the ice by sharing their favourite apps (how Silicon Valley). As Jamie said, it was a "modern" meeting — two kids, two moms and two iPads!

My daughters' favourite iPad application is Angry Birds HD — where "angry" birds try to get the green pigs. Seriously. Check out Jamie's site … she has far more suggestions.

Are you going to get one? Jen's thinking about it too.

Hi!!! How have you been? Did you take the iPad class (do they offer them here???) I took the free “how to use the iPad” class in California, mainly because Scottish hubby suggested I did because it was free. I thought I wouldn;t learn anything BUT it was so worth it. They highlighted all the little features, like controlling the backlighting if reading iBooks in bed at night, there is also a cool features where you can stop the screen from rotating, and use numbers quickly w/o changing screens. OK I’m a geek.

I forgot to mention iBooks in this post, that is VERY COOL, and so easy to get books. You could but an iPad just to read books.

Duck Duck Moose sounds like fun. There are lots of little smudge marks all over our iPad screen, it’s very popular in our house.

I was really lucky to win one at Cybermummy and let me confess something: I cannot imagine my life without it anymore! I LOVE it and big makes all the difference. the only problem, not good for the technology addiction, it reinforces it…

we have one iPad in our house and we fight over it…it is my husband’s officially as he needs it for work but we all get our fair share and suddenly the iphone screen has become so small! My son who was really into his ipod touch only resorts to it now if the ipad is not available:)

    I love Iota’s suggestion.
I’m also a bit behind the times, don’t have an iphone, swear at my parents Apple computer A LOT and will probably just stick to my trusty laptop for a while yet.
My children are clearly going to despair of me.

Hi Susanna – we met at the Miele event if you recall. http://robin1clark.wordpress.com/2010/01/19/some-interesting-coffee-facts/
I agree the iPad is great – I “part exchanged” my iPhone for one as it were by selling my iPhone and downgrading and using the money for an iPad. Rationale being that mobile internet was a bit frustrating and I’d rather have a bigger screen to browse the web in front of the TV and play games on.
Great for reading too – and better than some other readers as it has a backlight for when you are up late finishing a fascinating book!
    Cheerio for now…

Well as you know, in this house we’ve only just moved from chalk and slate, to pen and paper, so it’ll probably be a few more decades before we make it to iPad.
I’ve just had a brilliant idea for an app, though. It’s a potty training aid. Some kind of reward system where you keep track of your successes (like a sticker chart). It’d be called “iPeed”. Not quite sure how it would work, exactly, but the name is too good to waste!

Um…. Apple fan girl here and yes I love it. Love the fact I can read books on this and kindle and it remembers where I am when I swap between them. Lots of surfing fun and have you tried the pinball?

I would love one, I love my iphone and my 2 year old is in love with it too, i’ve downloaded loads of apps for her she loves the Talking Tom / Talking Larry ones. Also the Duck Duck Moose ones are great educational ones. I can now ‘bribe’ her to sit still whilst I plait her hair and it has become a very useful bargaining tool! So I am working on getting an Ipad its high on my wish list
