What to eat and drink in Costa Barcelona #bcnmuchmore

Strawberries from Mareseme are a bit smaller, but very sweet!

Thinking of visiting Barcelona and the surrounding areas? Lucky you, you’re in for some culinary treats! I’m still dreaming of the Mareseme strawberries from my recent visit for Costa Barcelona Week. These strawberries are known for being a bit smaller but they are very sweet and heavenly!

The UNESCO acclaimed Mediterranean diet is in full force in Costa Barcelona, fuelled by the abundance of fruits, vegetables, legumes and seafood from the surrounding area. Many regions have their specialties, such as strawberries from Mareseme, Gava Asparagus, Ordal peaches, Villanova prawns, Valles Oriental tomatoes, El Prat artichokes and Olesa de Montserrat olive oil. The mild climate and sea air provide the perfect combination for produce to thrive.

Foodies will be delighted to try Chef Carme Ruscalleda’s three Michelin-starred Restaurant Sant Paul in coastal Sant Pol de Mar, but perhaps the best meals are those at local restaurants trying Catalan specialties like Xato, a winter salad with a nut dressing, white beans and sausage and Coca de Llavaneras, traditional pastry filled with Catalan custard and topped with pine nuts and sugar. On the evening of St Juan (St John the Baptist) it’s customary to eat coca, drink and jump over a bonfire!

Catalans take their food seriously and also their drink! There are 765 wineries in Catalunia that produce 180 million bottles of wine and 200 million bottles of cava each year. Barcelona’s appellations – DO Cava, DO Penedes, DO Alella – are all very accessible and known for their Cava (sparkling wine). You can visit not only to find your favourites but also do fun acitvities such as picnics or a carriage ride through the vineyards.

Check out my photos from the trip. I hope you find something you’d like to try!

Catalonian sausages and cured meats.

Pa amb Tomaquet, Rustic bread rubbed with ripe tomatoes and garlic and sprinkled with olive oil and salt. Eatern for breakfast, lunch, tapas – anytime you are hungry! Simple recipe but secret is using the best quality ingredients.

Garrotxa is a traditional Catalan goat’s milk cheese, which nearly became extinct in the 1980s. The speciality is making a comeback thanks young cheesemakers and goat farmers’ cooperative in the Garrotxa area of Catalonia.

Sardines cooked traditionally outside on a grill.

Valles Oriental is known for its tomatoes.

Arròs negra, black rice, is a Catalan dish made with cuttlefish (squid) and rice, and similar to seafood paella

Fideuas is like a seafood paella, but made with short noodles.

Melinato is a Catalan dessert made with cheese, honey and nuts. It is a good as it looks.

Cava Llopart, the oldest producer of fine cava since 1887.

The Fideuas was AMAZING. I want to lean how to make it. Though of course it wouldn’t be the same as experiencing it in Costa Barcelona!
