My nearly 8-year-old was a bit stroppy last night and I did what any parent would do — took away her Club Penguin cards. She wasn't very happy about it and left me this note while I was in the bath:
Dear Mum and Dad,
I am caping* outside tonight.
Tomorrow I will leave.
Emily
*I think she meant "camping".
Oh dear. What would the neighbours say if they saw her outside in a tent? It's way too cold.
(Do not fret, alls well that ends well. We had a cuddle before she went to bed and she told me she will be much happier when she gets a rest — and her Club Penguin cards back).

I remember telling my parents I was moving out when I was about 7. The plan was to move into the ballet school but unfortunately I couldn’t dance so that scheme is on hold ….for now …

Toni — love it, barbies save the world

Okay this post made me giggle. I remember running away to the back yard when I was little, I had a teeny suitcase with barbies, i was well set for survival yes?

Ditto Club Penguin cards – anything to do with the bashing penguins game on the web????!!!! Blog post please!
Solveig | 10th Dec 09
Ha ha! I have a very clear memory from my childhood of telling my mum I was running away and of her saying okay then, getting a bin bag and helping me pack all my clothes into it. I made it as far as the front garden. Running away is not much fun when your mother helps you to do it…

OK, I’ve just clicked through to Club Penguin, and I’m none the wiser. Help!
angelsandurchinsblog | 10th Dec 09
Never mind ‘caping’, what are Club Penguin cards? Will I found out in a few years?
A Modern Mother | 10th Dec 09
too2- lovely thought 😉
April – no Club Penguin, really?
Rosie – a cry for help
Rosie Scribble | 10th Dec 09
Ooh, I love the fact that she left you a note!!

It’s just not a real childhood if you don’t want to run away from home at least once. we don’t have Club Penguin here in the US- they look super cute though!

I see this as a little glimpse of the drama you are going to be treated to in the tween/teen years.

Milla – LOL!
Milla | 10th Dec 09
might have meant crapping?? Or, no, I have the dog on the brain. Bad move. Also get the shakes to contemplate camping. Think I’d almost prefer the crapping.

MadHouse — if you don’t know now, you will soon enough! They are cards that are “traded” on the playground. My daughter is a master trader.
TheMadHouse | 10th Dec 09
What is Club Penguin???? MaxiMad was far too tired last night and very grumpy

Jen — that is a mother’s worst nightmare I think

This is a very sweet story. I never did run away from home but my sister did for real when she was a teenager. That was scary.

Heather — that’s too funny
Heather | 10th Dec 09
That is so cute. I dont remember ever saying I would but i did plan it once. I decided against it in the end because i wouldn’t be able to take as much toilet roll as I would need for a year. I must have been quite an odd child!

Antonella — she was planning on going to her best friends house — but not sure how she was going to get there as she lives a fair bit away!
Erica — I hope you told your mother that, bet she was happy
Lisa — cute!
Mwa — yes, she just wanted a cuddle I think
Vic — no!!!
Vic | 10th Dec 09
Does she even have a tent?
Mwa | 10th Dec 09
At least she told you. That’s something.
Lisa | 10th Dec 09
I left home once. Packed my little suitcase. Got to the lamp post at the end of the road and stopped. Why? Because I wasn’t allowed past that point… What a good girl!
Erica | 10th Dec 09
I remember ‘leaving home’ at least once a week when I was about seven 🙂
I’d make it to the park, but to get anyway I needed to cross a busy road, which I never quite managed 🙁
Antonella | 10th Dec 09
So funny! My daughter used to pack her things (toothbrush, pyjamas and teddy bear) and move next door to our neighbours, whenever she felt treated “unjustly”. Fortunately she never managed to open the front door! All the best. Ciao. A.
