Goodbyes. I hate them.

Butterfly Some friends stay with you forever. They become so entwined in the fabric of your life that it never needs to be mended. Others flit in and out like a butterfly, stopping only briefly to rest their wings.

A butterfly in of my circle of friends left today. A job in Dubai was the lure. Constant sunshine also had something to do with it I suspect.

As an expat this happens often and though you think you are used to it, you really aren't.

It's easy for the one that leaves … an adventure awaits. Those left at home just go on … with one less coffee to make and wine glass to fill.

Thanks ladies for your support. You never really get used to friends leaving, and it seems to happen a lot to me. My husbands used to joke with me each time I met a new friend that they would be calling removals soon…

Actually, I find the US a very transient place. I have lost count of the good friends that have moved, and not all of them were expats. It almost makes you not want to make friends again, but that’s no way to live.

Wonderful way to describe it. I know the feeling well.

Yes, definitely more exciting and less painful for the one leaving. Thank heavens for e-mail!

Goodbyes are always very sad. I think it’s difficult for those leaving too. Hang on to those happy butterfly memories!

    Beautifully put.

You made me think of the airport scene in Dumb and Dumber.
I hope your friend enjoys their adventure, and you missing them is curtailed by cheap holidays to visit.

Oh, how I know those goodbyes. They never get easier, either.

Hugs. Not an ex-pat, but I seem to live in a very mobile area – So Cal. I have been through it more times than I like to count. It is hard.

My daughter is gearing up for major goodbyes come end of the school year. It is one of the worst part of being expats, that is for sure.
