Favourites: Hyatt Regency Resort and Spa, Huntington Beach
There are few hotels I call favourites. The ones you remember fondly, where everything just falls into place and allows you to enjoy family time with no distractions. I visited the Hyatt Regency Resort and Spa 6 years ago on a press trip – and the kids are STILL talking about it. Just steps from the beach, the Andalusian inspired Hyatt Regency Resort and Spa has firmly made it on my favourites list. It is the perfect place for families to base themselves and enjoy all Surf City USA has to offer. Hyatt Regency Resort and Spa in Huntington Beach is a proper resort on an expansive beach front property. There are more than 500 rooms, many with an view looking towards the Pacific Ocean. There’s a choice of swimming pools, restaurants (don’t miss Watertable, their signature eating establishment), spa, shops and surf lessons. Want to just lounge on the beach? Your resort fee includes beach chairs, towels and umbrellas, so you can sit in the cool Ocean breeze and breathe in the whole surf scene. On your way back, grab a glass of their complimentary cucumber or citrus water at reception, a perfect thirst quencher for a tough day at the beach! Kids will specially love Slyders Water Playground, with water slides, wading pools, cabana rentals, and daily activities like hula hoop contests and fish feeding. Plus there’s nightly s’mores. What more could you ask for? The Hyatt Regency Resort & Spa: Accomodation We had connecting rooms with an Oceanfront view, with a private patio. The rich decor is classic Hyatt, with wooden furniture, natural stone bath, and the signature Hyatt Grand Bed with pillow top mattress (ahhh, luxury). There’s a 42-inch flat screen TV (I sometimes wonder if we are the only ones that never turn on a television whilst on holiday). For me, there’s in-room Starbucks coffee maker and High speed wifi for up to 6 devices! Hotel Amenities: Camp Hyatt, Pools, Spa Grotto and Slyders With a plethora of pools to choose from, you’ll find something for everyone. I enjoyed the main pool, with the Manetoa poolside restaurant and bar (and happy hour drinks). The girls’ clear favourite was Slyders – with water slides and wading pools, clearing catering for the younger set. Camp Hyatt offers sessions for guests ages 3-12. Daily activites include fish feeding, hula hoop competitions, intro surf lessons and limbo dancing! In the summer, enjoy “dive in” movies with a BBQ and a film at sunset. Or rent a cabana – which comes with a flat screen TV, wifi, bottles water, fresh fruit, s’mores kit and poolside service. My 10-year-old’s perspective “Slyders was really fun. There were three fantastic water slides, a MASSIVE hot tub, a swimming pool and a wading pool. There were also fire pits to roast marshmallows for s/mores. I really liked the long slide because it took a forever to get to the end and then splash into the pool. They organized several activities, including “minute to win it” (you had a minute to complete a challenge) and cookie decorating.” Toes on the Nose: Activity and adventure center Located at the resort, this activity and adventure store offers surf lessons, cycle rentals, body boards, wet suits, sand toys and adventure packages, including Duffy boat cruises, kayaking and fishing charters. We had surf lessons from Sam and Paul, where the lessons guarantees you will stand up on a surf board by the end of the lesson. The first time on board, our girls stood up several times and even rode in a few waves. Clearly the highlight of our trip. Beach Amenities You reach the beach through a unique bridge right over PCH (it’s the only hotel that offers this direct route, with other hotels you’ll need to cross PCH via traffic lights). Your resort fee includes beach chairs, umbrellas and towels for use. They’ll set it all up for you for a fee. Rent a body board from Toes on the Nose. Organised beach games. Dining: Watertable Watertable is the signature restaurant at Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort & Spa. Watertable combines the union of rustic and refined, old and new – in both design and cuisine – to appeal to guests’ evolving palates. The menu features seasonal, regional grill centric American fare, paired with a distinguished selection of vintage world-class wines, craft brews, artisanal cocktails, craft and naturally infused waters, in a unique nod to its name. My 12-year-old’s perspective After a day of travelling and cycling it was a relief to sit down and have a bite to eat. But this resort restaurant wasn’t just a normal food – it was one of the best meals I’ve had! (not including my mum’s enchiladas). The very friendly waiter picked out wine for my mum and dad and we got Shirley Temples (with extra syrup). We ended up getting very good starters, mains and desserts, and enjoyed our meal at the Waterfront.
