A Modern Mother with Steve Redgrave

On Friday I was a guest of BP at the Our Greatest Team Rises gala event at the Royal Albert Hall. My main mission was to chat with five time Olympic rowing champion Steve Redgrave!

Kate and her 90 women challenge

Kate on Thin Ice is absolutely shining in her new role at BritMums helping to connect bloggers with good causes. Her latest endeavour is to get 90 women to write 90 words about Breakthrough Breast Cancer. So, here goes… My first memory is my mother, kissing my forehead and tucking …

I changed my mind mummy

Red nose Last Friday morning my youngest, aged 6, didn't want to part with a pound coin in order to wear home clothes to school. In case you've landed on this blog from across the pond, Friday was Red Nose Day/Comic Relief, a fund raising appeal where basically all of the UK comes together to raise money for charity. The evening culminates in a live telethon, and many celebs donate their time in some way. Gordon Brown, JLS, Justin Bieber, Paul McCartny, Davina McCall, and Keira Knightley all made an appearance this year. It's really an amazing event, raising more than £74 million on this campaign.

British mummy bloggers unite to save the children

Bb3[1] Mum bloggers are the new black. They are fashionable and everywhere and I love it when they use their influence for the greater good.

Three bloggers that I respect immensely are heading to Bangladesh on 28 August to make a difference. Spearheaded by Save The Children, the plan is to put pressure on world leaders (do you hear us Nick???) at the UN Summit in New York to make due on promises to help mothers and children around the world. They want to get as many people as possible to sign the petition.

The bloggers include:

Sian from Mummy Tips (and fellow CyberMummy partner);

Eva from NixdMinx;

Josie from Sleep is for the Weak.

You rock ladies!

How many mums does it take to organise a charity dinner?

Gala dinnerIn my experience, charity dinners are usually the result of the hard work of at least five mums. The committee is formed eight months before the event, and it meets at least twice a month. Hours are spent agonising over chicken dijon or beef medallions and if it should be black tie or let's be crazy, how about a Bollywood theme? Activity increases to a crescendo in the last three weeks leading up to THE EVENT. Are the raffle tickets back? Can you go to HobbyCraft to pick up silver coated twigs? And some white silk lillis?  More meetings. Lots of phone calls. Texts. Add it all up and it must be at least 200+ woman hours. 160 coffees. 240 chocolate digestives. Not to mention the lost sleep.

Advent calendars and the real meaning of Christmas

It’s December 1st which means that on the way home from school today Emily asked why she didn’t have an Advent calendar. But you do honey, I said. California Grandma sent us a nice one with Baby Jesus, Joseph and Mary, the three wise men, the whole cast from the nativity play. …
